A reliable mug and basket routine

A mug with a roomy removable basket offers a straightforward way to brew loose tea and stop it at the strength you prefer.

Fit comes before the first brew

A good mug basket sits securely at the rim and reaches far enough into the water for your usual serving. Check both points with cool water before making tea. A narrow basket may hang neatly but crowd expanding leaves; a shallow one may miss the water in a half-filled mug. The most useful combination is a vessel and filter that suit the amount you actually drink, rather than the largest capacity available.

Measure the mug's normal water volume once and use the packet's recipe for that amount. Put the dry leaves in the clean basket, then add the water at the recommended temperature. If a lid is supplied, use it as the product instructions suggest. Set a timer and put the basket's resting dish beside the mug before you begin, so finishing the infusion does not require a search through the kitchen.

Lift the leaves out, not the mug up

At the end of the steep, lift the basket slowly by its intended handles. Let it drain briefly over the mug without squeezing the leaves or shaking hot droplets around. Place it on a stable dish. The tea remaining in the cup is now separate from the leaves, which gives you a clear point at which to taste, add milk if desired or carry the drink to another room.

If you plan another immediate infusion, keep the basket in a clean place and out of accumulated liquid. The next brew may need a different contact time because the leaves are already wet and have released some flavour. If you are finished, let the basket cool, remove the leaves and wash it according to its care instructions. Pay attention to the base seam, where fine particles can collect.

Use the routine to solve one problem

When the cup is disappointing, check the simple details before changing equipment. Were all the leaves immersed? Was the portion appropriate for the water? Did the basket come out when the timer rang? A roomy filter is helpful, but it cannot compensate for an accidental ten-minute steep or an oversized mug filled with too little tea. Once those basics are reliable, adjust the recipe in small steps until the combination gives a cup you are happy to repeat.
