A small scale makes loose tea easier

A scale removes the guesswork caused by different leaf shapes. It is most useful when you want to repeat a cup you already enjoy.

Why the spoon keeps changing

A teaspoon of long, twisted leaves can look generous while weighing surprisingly little. Fill the same spoon with tightly rolled tea and it may hold considerably more. Neither tea is being measured incorrectly by the spoon; the problem is expecting a measure of space to give a constant weight. A small scale makes that difference visible before the water arrives.

Start with the preparation advice for your particular packet. If it gives a weight and water volume, weigh the leaves for that volume rather than for a loosely defined cup. Your large breakfast mug and a small porcelain cup are unlikely to need the same portion. Where only a spoon measure is supplied, weigh one ordinary portion once and record the result as a reference, not as an official conversion for every tea.

Make weighing a short job

Place a clean, dry dish on the scale and press tare so that the display returns to zero. Add the dry leaves gradually. A scale that reads in tenths of a gram is usually more convenient for small tea portions than a kitchen model that jumps in whole grams. Check the maximum load and avoid placing a heavy kettle or a wet, hot teapot on a pocket scale.

Once the leaves are in the pot, keep the water amount and timing consistent for a few brews. If the result is thin, try a modest increase in leaf weight next time. If it is too forceful, reduce the dose while leaving the other settings alone. Recording the change matters more than chasing a supposedly perfect number to several decimal places.

You do not have to weigh forever

For an everyday tea, a familiar scoop may become perfectly practical after a few comparisons. You now know what your usual portion looks like. Bring the scale back when you open a tea with a different leaf shape, change vessels or cannot work out why a brew has drifted. It is a useful reference tool, not an entrance requirement for enjoying loose tea.
