A desk routine that ends the infusion

The most useful desk setup is one that lets you remove the leaves without abandoning your work or risking a spill near electronics.

Bring the finishing step with the mug

A mug of loose tea is easy to carry to a desk; a place for its wet basket is easier to forget. Put a small stable drip dish beside the mug before you begin. Keep both away from the keyboard, cables and the edge of the table. The goal is not to build a miniature tea station at work. It is to make the end of the infusion as convenient as taking the first sip.

Choose a basket with a comfortable lifting point and enough room for your usual portion. If the lid doubles as a resting dish, check that it sits securely and can contain the drips. A decorative lid that tips when loaded with a wet filter is not serving that purpose well. Test the arrangement with cool water before relying on it during a busy call.

Use a reminder that survives distraction

Set a timer you will actually notice, taking account of headphones or a muted phone. When it signals, remove the basket rather than merely dismissing the alert. If meetings make that unreliable, brew and strain the tea in the kitchen first, then bring only the finished drink to the desk. This can be simpler than repeatedly trying to rescue a cup whose leaves stayed in through an unexpected conversation.

Avoid filling the mug to the brim for the journey. Carry it with a secure grip, and use a suitable lidded cup if the route is awkward. A lid intended to reduce splashes is not automatically leakproof, so follow the product's instructions. Do not put a hot mug on paperwork or a surface that cannot tolerate heat and moisture merely because the usual coaster is occupied.

Make clearing up part of the break

When you finish, take the basket and dish back for cleaning rather than leaving damp leaves beside the screen all afternoon. If you plan another immediate infusion, keep the equipment clean and the leaves out of pooled liquid. Otherwise discard them. A desk routine works best when it has a clear beginning and end: prepare, remove, drink, clear. You can still enjoy an interesting tea without monitoring it throughout your working day or turning the next task into an accidental extension of the steep.
