Clean every removable part of a travel lid
A clean-looking lid can hide yesterday's tea beneath a seal. Learn which pieces are meant to come apart.

Start with the lid you actually own
Twist lids, sliding openings and push-button stoppers do not come apart in the same way. Find the care instructions for the exact model before pulling at a seal or prising a mechanism open. A removable ring may have a particular orientation; another component may be permanently fitted. Taking a photograph before disassembly can help you remember the arrangement, but the manufacturer's diagram remains the reference. Work over a clear surface so a small piece does not disappear into the sink. If a part will not release as described, stop and check the instructions rather than applying more force to a drinking surface or delicate clip.
Wash the hidden contact points
Empty the mug after use and clean the permitted removable pieces separately with the method recommended for their materials. Pay attention to the underside of the drinking opening and the channel where a seal sits. Rinsing the assembled lid may leave those areas untouched. Use a suitably soft brush where access is awkward, without scratching or puncturing the seal. Do not assume dishwasher safety from the stainless steel body; lids and coatings may have different requirements. Rinse thoroughly so cleaning solution does not become the next flavour in your tea. Leave the separated pieces somewhere clean with air around them, and wait until they are dry before closing the mug for storage.
Reassemble and check before travelling
Inspect the seal for damage, distortion or persistent residue. Refit it in the specified direction and make sure it lies evenly in its channel. A ring that looks almost right can still prevent a lid from sealing. Test the assembled mug with cool water over the sink before trusting it with a hot drink in a bag. That check is especially useful after replacing a part. If it leaks, do not compensate by tightening the cap beyond its normal stop. Identify the misplaced or worn component and obtain a compatible replacement if needed. A travel mug is most convenient when cleaning is part of the return-home routine, not a complicated repair undertaken just before leaving the house.
